Two More Semiconductor Manufacturing Units in India Approved

The Union Cabinet chaired by Shri Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, has approved two more semiconductor manufacturing units in India under the aegis of the India Semiconductor Mission – ISM including the first commercial mini/micro-LED display facility in the country, which is based on GaN – Gallium Nitride Technology and a semiconductor packaging facility.

The two approved standard proposals are for setting up semiconductor manufacturing plants in Gujarat with an estimated total investment amount of about Rs 3,936 crore and are projected to generate 2,230 jobs for skilled professionals.

Details of the two approved proposals for the semiconductor manufacturing units in India are hereunder.

  1. Crystal Matrix Limited – CMLto set up an integrated facility for compound semiconductor fabrication and ATMP to be located in Dholera, Gujarat, for mini/micro-LED display module manufacturing. The integrated facility will additionally provide GaN foundry services such as epitaxy on 6” wafers. The yearly proposed production capacity comprises 72,000 sq. meters for mini/micro-LED display panels as well as 24,000 sets of RGB wafers when it comes to mini-micro-LED GaN epitaxy wafers. The proposed products will be used in large displays for televisions and even signage and commercial displays, medium-sized displays for tablets, smartphones, and also in-car screens, and micro-displays for Extended Reality – XR glasses along with smartwatches.
  2. Suchi Semicon Private Limited – SSPL is establishing an Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test – OSAT facility in Surat, Gujarat, for the manufacturing of discrete semiconductors. Suchi Semicon is recommended to have a production capacity of 1033.20 million chips annually. Target applications consist of power electronics, analog ICs, and industrial systems in end markets, including industrial automation, automotive, and consumer electronics.

With these two approvals, India’s semiconductor ecosystem would get a big boost as the overall number of approved projects in the India Semi-conductor Mission – ISM would reach 12, with a total accumulated investment of approximately Rs.1.64 lakh crore.

These would be complementing the growing world-class chip design capacities being built up in the country, which are fueled by design infrastructure assistance offered by the government to 315 academic institutions as well as 104 start-ups.

In India, the pace continues to build in the semiconductor ecosystem with the ten approved projects presently in multiple stages of execution. Two projects have already commenced commercial shipments from India, and there are another two which are anticipated to begin commercial shipments shortly.
