SK Hynix from South Korea plans to construct a memory chip factory in Japan at the Miyagi prefecture and may spend tens of trillions of won on the project, the Hankyoreh newspaper reported on August 21, 2026, citing industry sources.

It is worth noting that SK Hynix is seeking to expand its production capacity in response to rising global demand when it comes to memory chips, the newspaper confirmed, and plans to make an investment in northeastern Japan.

It stated that Chey Tae-won, the SK Group Chairman, recently visited the area, which is regarded as one of the recognized semiconductor industry hubs in Japan.

The report said the plan to build memory chip factory in Japan is likely to be the first large-scale semiconductor ⁠manufacturing investment in Japan by a chip maker from South Korea.

As per the latest development, SK Hynix has confirmed that it had made no decision as yet in response to the report, but any location with the appropriate infrastructure could indeed be a possible option.
