Tuas Power has been awarded the rights to build, own, and manage a new turbine that will increase the electricity generation capacity of Singapore by December 2031.
The new hydrogen compatible combined cycle gas turbine – CCGT has a generation capacity of 670 MW, which is sufficient to supply electricity to around 1.2 million four-room HDB flats for a year.
This will be on top of over 20 CCGTs in the power system as of today, which are currently powered through natural gas, the Energy Market Authority – EMA said on Thursday, August 20, 2026.
The new project will bring a number of hydrogen-compatible CCGTs to five, or those under development, by 2031, which includes the one Tuas Power is going to build.
At present, CCGTs happen to be the most efficient thermal generation units that are available to meet Singapore’s demand.
In these units, a gas-fired power plant burns natural gas as well as air so as to make the turbine spin and produce electricity.
In CCGTs, this is an additional turbine, driven by steam, which generates more electricity.
The announcement from the EMA comes after a call in April 2026 for energy companies to go ahead and construct almost three new hydrogen-ready power plants in 2031 and 2032 to meet the electricity demand in Singapore.
Singapore’s electricity demand is projected to increase significantly in the years ahead, fuelled by robust economic growth, transport electrification and the growth of energy-intensive industries like semiconductor manufacturing and data centres, confirmed the authority.
Its forecasts predict the peak electricity demand will increase by between 2.4% and 4.8% per year over the next decade.
It is well to be noted that the peak demand is expected to be 9.6 gigawatt – GW to 11.4 GW in 2031.
Interestingly, preparation is vital to meet Singapore’s increasing demand, added Puah Kok Keong, the EMA chief executive.
He added that “Tuas Power’s new hydrogen compatible combined cycle gas turbine – CCGT will provide the capacity we need for the growth of energy-intensive sectors.” As per him, the CCGTs fired by natural gas offer dependable baseload power as Singapore explores multiple routes leading to a cleaner energy future.
