Pilot Project to Create Hydrogen Energy Corridor in China

China has authorized a four-year pilot project to create hydrogen energy corridor between Northeast China and the Yangtze River Delta in a significant effort to speed up its shift to clean energy.

Shanghai is taking the lead in an effort that will involve 14 cities in the two regions to create an integrated hydrogen ecosystem in the form of a hydrogen energy corridor linking resource production with key industrial application centers. The cross-regional strategy creates a collaborative network between the energy-producing North as well as the high-demand South and builds a common land-and-sea supply chain.

The four-year initiative will focus on over 30 key areas of research and development, which include advanced fuel cell technology, equipment for producing conventional hydrogen, and specialized storage and transportation systems. The scope is enlarged to large-scale green energy synthesis, particularly on green ammonia and green methanol synthesis.

It is worth noting that a green fuel bunkering and trading center will be set up at the Yangshan Port in Shanghai to boost maritime decarbonization, turning one of the busiest container hubs in the world into an important refueling spot for clean cargo carriers.
