Genera New Energy and Bracco Imaging have confirmed the establishment of a biomethane production plant in Italy at Tuscany, on October 14, 2026. The project is one of the main objectives in Bracco’s long-term emissions reduction plan and brings together direct involvement from Bracco with Genera New Energy’s capabilities in funding, development, and operations as far as sustainable energy infrastructure is concerned.
It is well to be noted that under a Biomethane Purchase Agreement, Bracco will acquire rights to the renewable gas properties originating from the total biomethane production of the plant by means of certified Guarantees of Origin.
The annual production corresponds to around 35% of the natural gas used today by the thermal power plant located in Bracco’s site of Ceriano Laghetto to produce steam for the production operations.
The project’s certified renewable gas attributes, held under the Biomethane Purchase Agreement, are expected to avoid roughly 8,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per year from steam generation activities over the next 15 years.
Bracco added biomethane to its 2024 roadmap for reducing emissions as a solution that should help to cut down greenhouse gas emissions linked to the production of steam. The company signed an agreement in March 2025 with Genera New Energy for joint development and investment in the transformation of the existing Greenway facility. The conversion work started in March 2025 and finished in September 2026.
Genera Group is the project’s industrial and majority investor partner, bringing together financial and development as well as operational expertise throughout the biomethane value chain. The Group has invested in Bracco in the conversion of the facility, has led its development through Genera New Energy S.p.A. Società Benefit, and entrusts its operation to Greenway Srl. This project is a significant milestone in the efforts to minimize greenhouse gas emissions from manufacturing, turning their sustainability strategy into tangible action and contributing to the evolution of industrial operations.
Says the Head of Global Technical Operations, Bracco Imaging, Marco Lupi, Our direct involvement in the development of the facility from the beginning of the project and the fruitful collaboration with our partner Genera New Energy enabled us to successfully match our targets in terms of cost and timing.
Adds Emiliano Di Penta, Energy Management Director, Bracco Imaging, “This achievement reflects the extensive and long-term collaboration between multidisciplinary teams across both companies in a pioneering sector shaped by an evolving regulatory framework.”
Notably, the project is part of Bracco’s wider sustainability program, encompassing several initiatives for improving energy generation and reducing energy consumption and emissions throughout all of its operations.
In July 2026, Bracco Imaging won its second successive EcoVadis Platinum Medal, the highest rating awarded by EcoVadis, placing the company in the top 1% of companies evaluated by EcoVadis during the assessment period of 12 months.
Says Paolo Potenza, Chief Executive Officer, Genera New Energy, “This project embodies Genera’s mission: actively supporting our clients in their reduction of greenhouse gas emissions while enhancing energy security and long-term cost competitiveness. We are proud to have invested in and developed this project alongside Bracco and grateful to them for choosing Genera as their long-term partner.”
Said Valentina Crivellari, Chief Operating Officer, Genera New Energy, “Following the completion of the facility, we are now entering the operational phase, ensuring reliable, efficient, and long-lasting performance while creating value for the local area. This is our way of making a tangible contribution to Bracco’s forward-looking emissions reduction strategy.”
This Biomethane Production Plant in Italy uses agricultural by-products and livestock manure as well as energy crops as feedstocks in compliance with the applicable regulations. The process produces digestate, which is a by-product that can be used in agriculture and allows for a more efficient use of local resources.
This is indeed a milestone that surely reflects the ongoing commitment by Bracco toward emissions reduction throughout its industrial functioning.
