Becton, Dickinson and Company – BD has entered into a collaboration with the US government to increase local medical supply manufacturing in US and also boost supply chain security when it comes to essential medical consumables, the company said.
The initiative targets medical consumables that BD says are used in about 90% of U.S. hospital visits, products that are fundamental to routine acute treatment, vascular accessibility, medication delivery, and respiratory processes.
According to Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, and President, BD, Tom Polen, “This agreement reflects a shared commitment between the US Government and BD to strengthening America’s healthcare infrastructure, expanding US manufacturing capacity, and supporting reliable access to essential medical technologies, ultimately building a more resilient healthcare system for the future.”
Multi-Billion-Dollar Investment Details
As part of the deal, BD plans to invest $19 billion in U.S. operations over a number of years, which will include capital spending, operational improvements, and supply chain facilities.
Of the total capital allocation, BD intends to deploy $3 billion to expand manufacturing in its planned domestic production network, the company said. The company’s network has identified key sites in Columbus and Broken Bow, Nebraska; Canaan, Connecticut; Sandy, Utah; El Paso, Texas; Covington, Georgia; Sumter, South Carolina; and Añasco, Puerto Rico.
The expansion will increase BD’s overall domestic production by about 5 billion essential medical consumables annually, raising the manufacturer’s percentage of domestically procured consumables to about 80%, according to company figures. The company also plans to make all of the BD needles used across the United States domestically, with American-made steel.
Tariff Relief and Healthcare Robustness
The collaborative agreement in addition to boosting local medical supply manufacturing in US also contains terms that allow for BD exemption from subsequent tariffs imposed under Section 232 on covered medical consumables as well as materials, subject to defined program milestones, the manufacturer’s statement said.
BD remarked that such regulatory certainty enables long-term production and operational planning as hospital providers operate to defend against the supply shortages that have been encountered throughout public health crises and logistics disruptions in recent years. BD said it is not calculating the monetary effect of the partnership, as official tariff rates, product scope, and execution dates have not been set.
