Pure Hydrogen Fuel Cell by Panasonic Deployed in Finland

Since August 2026, a Pure Hydrogen Fuel Cell, which is supplied by Panasonic Electric Works Co., Ltd., and an Air-to-Water Heat Pump System – A2W provided by Panasonic HVAC & CC Co., have been put in place at the Hydrogen House demonstration premises, which is operated by the Central Finland Mobility Foundation – Cefmof in Finland’s Jyväskylä.

It is well to be noted that solar energy utilization is challenging year-round in Central Finland due to the limited number of winter daylight hours. This demonstration project aims at validating the optimization and scalability of an integrated energy solution combining a pure hydrogen fuel cell and an air-to-water heat pump system to maximize the value of hydrogen utilization. The system aims to improve the year-round energy efficiency of the Hydrogen House by supplying electricity for its operation and thermal energy for the heating of the entire building while making the most effective use of the available hydrogen resources.

The systems installed should be in continuous operation by the end of 2026 after a first trial operation period.

The Pure Hydrogen Fuel Cell generates 10 kW of electrical output at full capacity, and the A2W system generates 9 kW of thermal output.

The project should be among the first integrated demonstrations of hydrogen energy in Europe and can be compared with current projects in Japan. It is expected to offer valuable insights into the potential viability of indoor hydrogen energy systems and their integration with heating equipment, especially in the harsh winter conditions in Finland. This initiative will help Panasonic develop solutions suited to various applications and regional needs and reinforce relationships with local partners and customers within the hydrogen sector.

Panasonic will further contribute to a sustainable and prosperous society by promoting renewable hydrogen solutions and creating new value via well-being and energy management.
