Vaisala, which is a global leader when it comes to measurement instruments and intelligence, announced that for the first time ever, it is introducing its DRYCAP® dew point measurement technology to hazardous locations with the launch of the Vaisala DMP370 Intrinsically Safe Dew Point Instrument.
It is well to be noted that the DMP370 is intended for hydrogen and industrial gas applications and provides Australian operators with a new way to continuously measure moisture in locations with combustible gases or dust. The instrument is a combined intrinsically safe solution of the Vaisala DMP37X probe and HMT370EX transmitter. It is certified up to Zone 0/20 according to ATEX and IECEx requirements. Announced at Gastech 2026 in Bangkok, the DMP370 is intended for use cases involving hydrogen production and storage, biogas upgrading, gas pipelines, chemical processing, and additional industrial processes where gas quality and hazardous-area standards meet.
Moisture measurement is important as gas infrastructure evolves
Australia’s gas sector includes existing natural gas infrastructure alongside emerging hydrogen, biomethane, and other lower-carbon gas applications. In these environments, moisture control is crucial so as to avail optimal gas quality, equipment efficiency, and operational dependability. Moisture in gas infrastructure, electrolyzers, and industrial processing facilities can impact fuel cell performance, decrease process efficiency, minimize equipment service life, and raise operational risks. Measurement is complicated when it is required to be done in a hazardous location. Equipment used in these environments may require suitable explosion-protection certification, limiting the measurement technologies available to operators. Interestingly, the demand is also rising globally. Global demand for hydrogen exceeded 100 million tonnes in 2025, as per the Global Hydrogen Review 2026 from the International Energy Agency.
Continuous evaluation devoid of regeneration
Traditionally, determining moisture in hazardous locations has been a trade-off. Depending on the protection concept and application, some solutions require more protective enclosures or create installation constraints. Other measurement technologies occasionally disrupt measurement processes during regeneration or heating cycles, creating gaps within the monitoring data. The DMP370 integrates intrinsic safety and continuous measurement. Intrinsic safety is achieved by design limits on the instrument’s electrical energy, which prevent it from being an ignition source within explosive atmospheres. The DMP370 can measure continuously with fast response and long-term stability thanks to the DRYCAP® technology and drift-compensation solution from Vaisala. This provides operators with nonstop gas-quality data, without measurement gaps due to sensor regeneration cycles. As hydrogen and renewable gas projects move from experimental installations to full-scale industrial operations, the demand for dependable, continuous gas-quality surveillance is growing, said the product line manager of industrial decarbonization at Vaisala, Antti Heikkilä.
He adds, operators need measurement solutions that support both process performance and safety in hazardous locations. “With the DMP370, we’re bringing Vaisala’s proven DRYCAP® measurement technology into hazardous locations, providing continuous dew point measurement in applications where explosion safety is essential.”
