Final Acceptance Certificate for Hydrogen Recovery Given

PyroGenesis Inc. a leader in ultra-high temperature processes and engineering innovation, a plasma-based technology provider to heavy industry & defence, announced on September 22, 2026 that its subsidiary Pyro Green-Gas obtained the Final Acceptance Certificate for a formerly announced major project undertaken for Tata Steel, which is one of the leading diversified steel producers in the world. The certificate demonstrates the successful completion of one year of operational liability and officially transfers the responsibility when it comes to the further operation of the system to the Client.

According to Mr P. Peter Pascali, President and CEO of PyroGenesis, “The Final Acceptance Certificate announced on September 22, 2026 marks the culmination of years of close collaboration with Tata Steel to develop and implement a solution for one of its largest steelmaking facilities. The steel industry’s off-gas processing sector has traditionally been dominated by some of the world’s largest engineering firms, making the successful completion and final acceptance of a system of this scale particularly significant for PyroGenesis. The system installed for Tata Steel covers an area equivalent to a football field and spans the height of a five-storey building. Having demonstrated our technology and engineering capabilities at this scale, we are now attracting interest from other major steelmakers. With more than 1,400 blast furnaces installed across 477 plants in 55 countries1 and continued investment in blast-furnace steelmaking – with approximately 70% of planned new global steel projects expected to incorporate blast furnaces – we believe there is a significant market opportunity for our advanced coke-oven gas cleaning and other steel industry technologies.”

Final Acceptance Certificate for Hydrogen Recovery – What is it about?

PGG announced on July 15, 2025, that it has completed a large project for Tata Steel to design and supply solutions for the coke-oven gas purification and hydrogen production processes designed to separate and recover hydrogen while removing toxic contaminants from coke oven gas. Under the deal, PGG achieved all key milestones for the project. Milestones included – an Integrated Cold Test confirming that all equipment and components met or exceeded required operating and safety standards and also a Provisional Acceptance Test verifying that the systems met agreed upon contractual specifications.

The project was completed in July 2025, when a one-year compliance and defects liability period was triggered during which system performance was monitored and PGG remained responsible for remedying any operational deficiencies. Those timescales are par for the course for industrial projects of this size. At the end of this one-year period, a client can normally either extend the evaluation period or give final acceptance and assume responsibility for future operations. Tata Steel has now issued the signed Final Acceptance Certificate for hydrogen recovery confirming the completion of PGG’s work under the agreement and the transfer of responsibility for future operations of the system to Tata Steel.

Project to Valorise Coke-Oven Gas by Tata Steel and Produce Hydrogen

Blast furnaces use coking coal, or coke, during the process of converting iron ore into steel. Coke is used both as a fuel to generate the intense heat needed to melt the iron ore, and as a reducing agent to strip the oxygen from the ore.

Coke-oven gas, a toxic mixture of human carcinogens produced in the coke-making process, consists of approximately 54% hydrogen, with the remainder being methane, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, tar, naphthalene and other hydrocarbons which must be separated and eliminated before the hydrogen can be cleaned, reformed and reused. Pyro Green-Gas, a PyroGenesis subsidiary, has decades of experience designing and installing technology solutions specifically in these situations.

As previously described, PGG provided both coke-oven gas purification solutions, and hydrogen production processes for extracting hydrogen and other toxic gases from the blast furnace process. The gases were then separated and cleaned and hydrogen was created with 99.999 percent purity.

The plant has been running 24 hrs./day continuously at the Tata steel plant in Kalinganagar, India where the newly reformed hydrogen from the system is being reused in other applications at the plant, improving production efficiency and environmental outcomes. PGG’s systems are cleaning 32,000 cubic meters of coke-oven gas an hour and drawing off 620 cubic meters of ready-to-use hydrogen an hour.
