GE Appliances and the IUE-CWA labour union, which represents manufacturing and technical workers, unveiled a planned $1b investment in Appliance Park that, which according to the company, is expected to make it the largest home appliance manufacturing site in the US.
The investment, GE Appliances said has –
- Over $400 million so as to transform Building 5 into a high-output dryer manufacturing plant, moving production from Mexico to Kentucky.
- $112 million for Building 1 in terms of offering new equipment and redesign of prevailing washer and dryer platforms.
- The previously disclosed $490 million investment in Building 2 in order to support production when it comes to front-load washers and washer/dryer combos beginning in 2027.
As per GE Appliances president and CEO Kevin Nolan, “Bringing our laundry and dishwasher manufacturing together gives us a real competitive advantage, with new synergies across our cleaning products and closer connections between the people who design, engineer and build them. That combination allows us to move faster, accelerate innovation and continue strengthening our industry-leading U.S. manufacturing business.”
In addition, Carl Kennebrew, the IUE-CWA President, said, “Investment in American manufacturing is critical to our economy and our communities. Our Union members are proud to manufacture American-made GE appliances in Louisville, and this new investment will ensure that our members keep delivering these high-quality products to American consumers for years to come.”
The $1b investment in Appliance Park without a shred of doubt will help GE Appliances support long-term expansion at Appliance Park and help protect roughly 4,700 production jobs when the project is fully executed, GE Appliances stated.
It is well to be noted that Louisville refrigeration production will cease in the beginning of 2027 to convert Building 5 to dryer production, GE Appliances reported. Dryer production is anticipated to commence in late 2027.
The company confirmed that employees will stay on the payroll throughout the transition, and there will be no layoffs associated with the retooling of Building 5. GE Appliances anticipates the transition will take roughly 9 to 12 months prior to dryer production commencing. As the production of the Appliance Park expands in 2027, employees will be given possibilities to transition into new manufacturing roles.
GE Appliances said it will keep making refrigerators at its plants located in Decatur, Alabama, as well as Selmer, Tennessee. As per the company, “The Decatur facility is the biggest refrigeration manufacturing operation in the U.S.”
